While the title of the plate indicates the mission bells are located at the San Juan Capistrano mission, the image is that of the bells at the San Antonio de Pala mission. Born in Corsicana, TX, Sloan studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. While there he shared a studio with B. J. O. Nordfeldt and became interested in color etching through his friendship with George Senseney. He then studied in New York City where he designed stage sets for the theater and from the mid-1920s to the early 1930s, he worked in his studio and puppet theater in San Francisco. Following that and with a few years spent in other cities, Sloan spent the remainder of his life in Los Angeles where he continued as a designer of stage sets and was given charge of the WPA Federal Theater.
