Grant was an award-winning political cartoonist for the Oakland Tribune and the Los Angeles Times Syndicate whose caricatures grace the National Archives and the libraries of presidents he skewered, including Truman, JFK and Johnson. Ed Asner's popular television series and character was named for him. Grant worked for Hatlo as assistant on the syndicated strip "They'll Do It Every Time" and has inscribed the book ' For Jimmy - /In fond memory of/those never to be forgotten/moments at ol' Hatlo U.' where/I learned cartooning from/the MASTER - /Warmest personal/regards - /(s) Lou Grant/Class of '45' Laid in is a ~200-word October 14, 1955 TLS (on Tribune letterhead) from Grant to Hatlo in which he reminisces 'I was pretty bitter about getting canned from the Call... When you stopped doing Swineskin, the day of the big football cartoon ended...' 'If you ever run into Shoemaker (likely Chicago editorial cartoonist Vaughn Shoemaker) give him my very best. He's a swell guy and has taken the trouble to give me a lot of constructive advice.' Next day shipping.
