Samuel Longfellow was the older brother of Henry W. Longfellow. Following his brother's death in 1882, Samuel Longfellow published this two-volume biography of him in 1886, writing while living at his brother's former home, Craigie House in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He subsequently wrote "Final Memorials..." in 1887.
