Yosemite Illustrated in Colors

San Francisco: Lithographed, printed and bound by H.S. Crocker & Co., 1890. First Edition. Folio. 4 preliminary leaves, [13] leaves of text, each illustrated with pen and ink sketches (with tissue guards) by Carl Dahlgren, all but one (the snow plant) with a printed poem by Harry Dix; 13 stunning chromolithographs after original watercolors by H. W. Hansen. Uncommon publisher's full brown leather binding with gilt illustrating & lettering on front cover; gilt dentelles inside front & rear boards. A very good copy (spine has been professionally restored; minor wear to extremities; light scraping to spine & rear board). Item #14449

"The chromolithographic views often were used with promotional material issued by various California merchants in a number of formats, including broadsides which reproduced a chromolithograph, part of a poem, and advertising copy." - Currey & Kruska 97. The views consist of classic Yosemite including Sentinel Rock, Bridal Veil, El Capitan, The Cascades, The Three Brothers, Vernal Falls, Cathedral Spires, Nevada Falls, Cathedral Rock, Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, General View, and The Snow Plant. According to a review in the Inland Printer (December 1890, page 242), each of the plates was printed in 17 colors, which required a total of 221 stones. 2000 copies were printed and the voluminous stones then destroyed due to the excessive storage cost. The production was offered in three bindings, our copy being published in full brown gilt decorated leather.
