From 1969 to 1971, many citizens of Memphis objected strongly to the use of nudes, and an exhibition of nude photography at the Memphis Academy of Arts; extreme incidents included death threats, car bombs, and a kidnapping. One of the photographers included in this collection, Murray Riss, who organized the "1971 Photography Invitational Exhibition" was forced to end the exhibition early and discontinue the use of nude models at the art academy for a period of time. Included: "1971 Photography Invitational" (quarto, 52pp in silver stapled wrappers; near fine condition) is the catalog of the exhibition held Jan. 14-Feb. 11, 1971 in the Arkansas Arts Center and Mar. 1-31, 1971 in the Memphis Academy of Arts. Photographers included Thomas Barrow, Linda Connor, James Dow, Reed Estabrook, Emmet Gowin, Betty Hahn, Robert Heinecken, Scott Hyde, Harold Henry Jones, Kenneth Josephson, Barbara Kasten, Leslie Krims, William Larson, Richard Lebowitz, Joyce Neimanas, Bart Parker, Walter Rabetz, Leland Rice, Murray Riss, Jon Ellis Stevens, Jerry Uelsmann, Alice Wells, Geoffrey Winningham, and John Wood. .
