From 1969 to 1971, many citizens of Memphis objected strongly to the use of nudes, and an exhibition of nude photography at the Memphis Academy of Arts; extreme incidents included death threats, car bombs, and a kidnapping. One of the photographers included in this collection, Murrary Riss, who organized the "1971 Photography Invititational Exhibition" was forced to to end the exhibition early and discontinue the use of nude models at the art academy for a period of time.
