Larkin was the most influential merchant in Mexican California, the first and only U.S. consul in California, and delegate to the state constitutional convention. This volume covers the years 1843-1844 during which Larkin was appointed as Consul of the United States for the Port of Monterey. Included are the first of Larkin's correspondence as Consul.
