Ernest Pickering was twenty-five years in the Amusement business and regarded as one of the prominent amusement men in the country when he purchased in 1919 the lease on the Fraser Million-dollar Pier at Ocean Park, California, located in the hear of the Santa Monica Bay District. The pier was 500 feet wide and extended out into the ocean 600 feet, 10 whole acres in need of fresh, new amusement blood. Over the next near, the pier was reconstructed from the pilings up with many new buildings and amusement ride including the Blarney Racer, Ye Olde Red Mill, Over the Top, The Captive Aeroplane, the Monkey Auto Speedway and more to attract the hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The brochure includes numerous photo-reproductions of builings on and around the pier. The rear cover depicts a dramatic night flight of Lieutenant Remelin of Barr's Flying Circus over the pier taken with a telescopic lense trained on the sky and held wide open from the start to the finish of the flight. Tragically, the Pickering Pleasure Pier burned along with the nearby Lick Pier resulting in enourmous financial loss. In its' day, the Pickering Pleasure Pier was considered one of the most popular amusement centers on the Pacific Coast.
