Miller's memoir about his life in Big Sur, California, where he resided for 18 years, beginning in 1944. After the publication of the book, which presents Big Sur as paradise on earth, many fans including writers (and writers who didn't write), mystics seeking truth in meditation (and the not-so-saintly looking for sex-cults or celebrity), sophisticated children and adult innocents; geniuses, cranks and the unclassifiable, began to arrive in Big Sur to explore the area and seek out Miller.
