Recent research on the communicational systems of the European States between the late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period has shown the importance of the solemn entrance ceremonial. Although often considered as a means of subjection used by monarchs, these ceremonies are increasingly seen as taking part in a growing political consensus established between the cities and the King through an abundance of both ritual and revelry. This book provides researchers an archive of entrance ceremonials for kings, princes, and bishops in the provinces of Poitou, Aunis and Saintonge. The study shows how the new codes of the Renaissance started to spread, together with the various ways in which urban societies became connected with the monarchic order between the 14th and the 16th century.
