At the urging of John Muir's friend, Robert Underwood Johnson, associate editor of The Century Publishing Company, Muir wrote this travel guidebook to Yosemite Valley, describing the valley's geography and the myriad types of trees, flowers, birds, and other animals that can be found there. The book includes previously published material as well as a new, lengthy chapter on the Hetch Hetchy Valley hoping to gain support for the ongoing campaign to preserve that "Tuolomne Yosemite."
