The story of the 47 Ronin, known as Chushingur, is one of the most popular Samurai tales in Japan. It is an 18th-century historical event in which a band of R nin (leaderless Samurai) avenged the death of their master. The incident immediately inspired a succession of Kabuki and Bunraku plays.
