Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford, 1st Baron Redesdale, (1837 – 1916) was a British diplomat, collector and writer. Nicknamed "Barty", he was the paternal grandfather of the Mitford sisters. He served in the British diplomatic service in Peking in the 1860s, shortly after diplomatic relations were established in 1860. Here are his memoirs of his life as a British diplomat through a series of letters.
