William C. Hunter was a long-time resident of Canton in the early part of the last century and he left entertaining accounts of what life was like in the great trading port before the upheavals of war. He was an American of the trading firm of Russell and Company. Here is his account of life in Canton in the 20 years before the Treaty of Wangxia between China and the United States was signed.
