Jo Mora's Carmel-by-the-Sea is one of his most desired maps and over the years has become uncommon. Jo created this map for the people of Carmel including its general history and current events, activities and local people. Jo was also quite a dog lover and he included some of the town dogs, gifted with personality, including his own dog Mike Mora who "could climb a rung ladder like a chimney sweep..." (Grandeau-Shorts Cartes 9a; Gilmore M15). Joseph Jacinto Mora (1876 – 1947) was a Uruguayan-born American cartoonist, comics artist, illustrator and cowboy, who lived with the Hopi and wrote extensively about his experiences in California. He was an artist-historian, sculptor, painter, photographer, illustrator, muralist and author. He has been called the "Renaissance Man of the West"
