John Howell, of course, was the noted San Francisco bookseller; John Gribbel was an American businessman, industrialist and philanthropist best remembered for his donation of the Glenriddell Manuscripts (two volumes of poems and letters by Robert Burns, the single largest collection of Burns's manuscripts in existence) to the National Library of Scotland; they are recognised as one of the Library's main treasures.
