In this work, written from the Confederate perspective, the author describes the conditions contributing to the 487 Civil War battles fought in Missouri, outlining the chief battles, raids, and campaigns. Especial attention is given to the movements of armies. Several chapters are devoted to the successes and failures of the Missouri State Guards. Biographies of key characters are included such as General Sterling Price, General Jo. O. Shelby, General John S. Marmaduke, Colonel Upton Hays, Colonel W.F. Cloud, General Gideon W. Thompson and many others.
