San Francisco: C. A. Murdock & Co. & William Doxey, 1895 - 1897. Number 1 published by C. A. Murdock & Co.; Numbers 2-24 published by William Doxey. Two octavo volumes with the Doxey imprint comprising the complete run of The Lark plus the Epilark, with publisher's index in each volume. Number I is the first issue with the Murdock imprint, contains the first appearance of Burgess' famous 'Purple Cow'. Illustrations throughout mostly by Gellett Burgess, but also some by Florence Lundberg, Ernest Peixotto, Maynard Dixon, Willis Polk, Reginald Rix and others. Book I contains issue numbers 1-12; Book II contains issue numbers 13-24 plus the Epilark. Both volumes bound in tan pictorial cloth; printed on bamboo paper. Minor wear; previous owner name in each volume; a near fine set. Item #20545

Founded by Gelett Burgess and Bruce Porter, The Lark featured primarily humorous verse and illustrations, almost all of it created by Burgess - best known for his short poem "The Purple Cow" - and other members of his circle, a group of artists and aesthetes known as Les Jeunes. The Magazine also features a number of pieces by and about Robert Louis Stevenson.
