Foote in 1888, and now edited with introduction, notes, maps, and illustrations..." (dust jacket) To ill to go on, Schallenberger wintered alone near Lake Tahoe and survived to complete the journey in the Spring of 1845. The next year, his cabin (on what became known as Donner Lake) would be used for shelter by members of the ill-fated Donner Party.
