Printed in a variety of colors but mostly red and black, 4 original leaves (from 'The Voiage and Travaile of Sir John Maundevile Kt;' 'Relation that Alvar Nunez, Cabeza de Vaca Gave;' 'Leaves of Grass' and 'The Santa Fe Trail to California') are tipped in; 28 reproductions of title pages, colophons, experimental pages, etc., types designed by Frederick W. Goudy, who provided a 7-page introduction. Index of titles, authors, artists and types. The leather spine is somewhat abraded & faded, and the boards somewhat discolored; there is scattered foxing to the first and last few leaves, the text is otherwise Near Fine. Item #21020

A lovely production,upon publication it was selected one of the "Fifty Books of the Year' while The Saturday Review lavished praise on it ("It will take its place with the half dozen notable books printed in America in the last half century.").
