Among Mexico's most colorful churchmen in the early decade of this century was the widely-known and highly-respected Francisco Orozco Y. Jumenez (1864 – 1936), late Archbishop of Guadalajara. He participated in protests and movements in defense of ecclesiastical interests and against the government during the period of the Mexican Revolution. He was banished five times from his archdiocese. During the height of the Cristero War, he remained hidden and was designated as the leader of the Cristeros. In 1926, the Mexican hierarchy suspended public liturgical services throughout the nation. Many of the bishops, including Jimenez went into exile, most of them in the United States. The meaning of APOLOGIA PRO VITA SUA is defense of one's life - a written justification for one's beliefs or course of conduct. This memorandum written by Archbishop Francisco Orozco Y. Jumenez at Chicago in October, 1929 sketches the background of the arreglo or pact whereby President Portes Gil and his government pledged to mitigate Federal anticlericalism.
