The illustrator, David Hendrickson (1896 – 1973) was a prolific American painter and commercial artist who illustrated children’s and other books and worked in advertising. His 50-year freelance career earned him the reputation as an artist specializing in rural, historical, and character subjects. Hendrickson's' work was known for its creativity and accuracy due to his, "painstaking research to all details concerned with any subject he depicted. His use of whimsy, metaphor and allegory in subtle ways added sparkle to all of his work." - University of Oregon. The author, Allan R. Bosworth (1901 - 1986), born in San Angelo, Texas, was a long-time Navy man, seeing service in both the Atlantic and Pacific, achieving the rank of commander. This charming book relates his family life in a small house tucked away in the hills of Gilroy, California, determined to succed as a free-lance writer or starve to death.
