California (INSCRIBED map by Jo Mora)

San Francisco: A. M. Robertson, 1945. First Edition Thus. INSCRIBED "To Rhoda & By, Lots of joy and sunshine to you both. Jo Mora." Color pictographic map (25" x 19"; framed 32" x 26"). This map is matted and framed with archival glass and is in fine condition. Signed maps by Jo Mora are rare in the market. Item #21296

This is the second version of Jo J. Mora's map of California but not a variation of Mora's 1927 California map published by A.M. Robertson in San Francisco. This map is smaller in size and it features a Lockheed Constellation 3-tailed airplane among the many drawings. The Del Monte Canning Co. commissioned the map and, allegedly, they bought the entire print-run as promotional giveaways. As a means to save money with this first printing, they used somewhat thin paper and some of the colors (blues and green primarily) did not take as strongly as the other colors. Within a short period of time, they switched to a heavier paper resulting in the colors staying strong. This first printing is more difficult to find. As with all Jo Mora cartes, it is packed with historical information and details, creatively and colorfully illustrated. He added details to this version, such as the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges that were not around in 1927 for his first, larger map. (Grandeau & Shorts Cartes 11; Gilmore M17).
