Two Views of Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo (Original Albumen Photographs)

Monterey, CAL. ca. 1882 & 1884. Original albumen photographs by C.W.J. Johnson (5 " x 8 1/4") mounted on heavy cardstock (7" x 10") with rounded corners. Light spotting and wear; the cardstock of both photographs are slightly warped. Uncommon pair of early images of the Carmel Mission show two different views from a similar position, one prior to the mission's restoration in 1882 and the other showing the restored mission in 1884. C. W. J. Johnson (1833-1903) arrived in California during the Gold Rush. After living in Feather River, Grass Valley (1863), and Nevada (1868), he moved to Eureka where he opened a photographic business with William N. Tuttle. In 1881, he settled in Monterey, becoming the Hotel del Monte's first official photographer from the mid1880s to the late 1890s, and operated a gallery on Alvarado Street from 1881-1898 in downtown Monterey.
