San Francisco: California Labor School, 1954. First Edition. SIGNED by Malvina Reynolds; American folk singer and social activist, Pete Seger; Irving Fromer, artist at the San Francisco Graphic Arts Workshop (assisted by members); and Holland Roberts, long-time director of the California Labor School. 8vo. 16 pp. Foreword by Pete Seger. “No. 83” inked on the lower left corner of the page with the Roberts afterword, perhaps indicating that this was some kind of special “autograph” edition, perhaps to raise more money for the school. Yellow illustrated wrappers in fine condition; a unique copy with the four signatures. Item #21407

Collection of tunes by one of the greatest musical political activists of the time. Reynolds (1900 – 1978) today is probably best remembered for her songwriting, particularly the songs "Little Boxes", "What Have They Done to the Rain" and "Morningtown Ride". She wrote many other tunes of commentary and protest about the state of the world and life in the United States...concerning the exploitation of workers, criminal justice, role of women, the stupidity of not voting, the homeless, uncontrolled capitalism, threat of nuclear war, etc. The California Labor School was an educational organization in San Francisco from 1942 to 1957. Like the contemporary Jefferson School of Social Science and the New York Workers School, it represented the "transformed and upgraded" successors of the "workers schools" of the 1920s and 1930s. Its initial program "promised to analyze social, economic and political questions in light of the present world struggle against fascism"
