Guy Gilpatric (1896 - 1950), son of a Scottish immigrant, is best known for his short stories about Scottish ship engineer Colin Glencannon, originally published in the Saturday Evening Post. Between 1930 and 1941, several Glencannon stories a year appeared in the Post and quickly developed a cult audience which eagerly awaited each subsequent story. Of these 8 Glencannon stories, Barnaby Conrad writes "I think what you folks have done - this projected series - is wonderful, fabulous, heartwarming, and a whole bunch of other adjectives that would have made that modest gentleman, the author, squirm. And, by the bye, I thnk your opus should be entitled: Tales of the Most Unmitigated, Scurrilous Rascal Who Ever Lived!" A 39-episode TV series starring Thomas Mitchell as Colin Glencannon was produced in 1959.
