Basset graduated from Stanford in 1901 and was teaching speech teacher at the University of Southern California when Stanford's first president, Dr. David Starr Jordan, selected him for the Stanford staff in 1900. He organized the speech and drama department at Stanford and for more than 10 years Dr. Bassett handled every speech course offered at Stanford; he was a professor there for 35 years before his retirement in 1938. In 1931 he was elected president of the Western Association of Teachers of Speech, and in 1933 he was named president of the national association. The year after his retirement he became dean of the Max Reinhard Workshop in Hollywood, which trained potential film actors and technicians. Item #21667
