The initial annual 'investment guide' issued by the venerable New York firm founded in 1877 and members of New York Stock Exchange, New York Produce Exchange, New York Cotton Exchange, and the Chicago Board of Trade. A pocket encyclopedia of U.S. business, contents include statements of railroad and industrial companies, stock quotations, stock exchange rules, historical statitics for U.S. imports and exports of merchandise and gold and silver, world gold and silver production, U.S. funded debt, crop production and prices, etc. Clews was a friend of President Abraham Lincoln (his firm was the second largest marketer of federal bonds during the United States Civil War) and served as an economic consultant to President Ulysses Grant. Towards the end of his life he wrote one of the most famous classics about life on Wall Street entitled "Fifty Years in Wall Street."
