[Los Angeles]: 1947-1950? Maceo B. Sheffield. Photographs measure 8" x 10". Crease to corner of each photograph, else newr fine condition. They picture 1) 21 men at an award ceremony, each numbered in ink and identified on the verso, which bears the stamp 'Photo by Maceo B. Sheffield' 2) ~ 36 men, ~ 28 women and ~ 6 young men (photo taken same day as 1) 3) nattily attired African American men The Lucky Few Rod and Gun Club was established c.1947 (incorporated in 1948) to serve the black community in Los Angeles. Among the Club's founders was Earl Broady, whose law firm became the most prestigious black law office in California; he later served as L.A. County Superior Court Judge. The club was affiliated with the NRA; its annual events included its Turkey Shoot (at the P.P. Lampkins Ranch near Corona); Installation Breakfast; Annual Barbecue and Shooting Match 'at the only shooting range and club house belonging to negroes'. These events were regularly reported on in The California Eagle. The club boasted some 35 members and sponsored a 25-member Junior Rifle Club which 'as well as having a good time, is interested in cutting down juvenile delinquency and helping the program of the government by training men and boys in the proper use of firearms safely.' The club also had a 15-member Ladies Auxiliary. By 1959, The California Eagle reported 'This unique club owns its own Club House and Rifle Range.'. Item #21785
