In the note, dated Monday, September 9, 185?, Gounod emotionally writes (in French) 'Dear Madam, In the midst of all the hustle and bustle attendant upon my return to Paris, I am writing to you literally, "in flight", to thank you for your very gracious parcel of four of the beautiful residents (pheasants or partridges) of your woods*.
