"A system of shorthand writing combining the principles of straight joinable and insertable vowel strokes and curved consonant strokes, both being subject to similar general rules of hooks and length." Isaac Strange Dement was the official reporter of the Eighth Judicial System of Michigan, editor of the 'National Stenographer.' Using 'Aristography,' he claimed to be able to write 402 words per minute. In 1897 he established 'Dement College' in Chicago to teach shorthand and typing. In addition, Dement was a published author and inventor of a 'mechanical cashier' (cash register); and an 'inking and recording mechanism.'.
