Based on the true story of Frank Lee Morris, whose escape from the "impregnable" Rock in 1962 made world headlines. The escape, plus Alcatraz's bad reputation, helped it close less than a year later. The book was made into a film starring Clint Eastwood as Morris, and Patrick McGoohan as the cruel warden. The movie gives a good idea of the horrors of prison life, and particularly the horrors of Alcatraz.
