The semi-autobiographical novel following the lives of the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—and details their passage from childhood to womanhood. It was an immediate commercial and critical success. One reason the novel was so popular was that it appealed to different classes of women along with those of different national backgrounds, at a time of high immigration to the United States. The story has been adapted to the stage, screen and television multiple times; the 2019 film starring Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, Eliza Scanlen and Timothee Chalamet. The film received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
