William Frederic Badè (1871 – 1936) was commissioned in 1915 as the literary executor to John Muir's estate. He immediately began to collect letters or copies of letters, hoping to locate a thousand such items; he ultimately accumulated nearly two thousand. He was also able to collect reminiscences from many people who had know Muir and he integrated these insights along with the letters into this two volume work. (BAL 14779; Kimes 366).
