An Old Shoe Box: The Story of a Discovery of a Drawing by Charles M. Russell
Santa Paula: 1975. First Edition. Quarto; 6pp; illustrations. A Fine copy in stapled ivory wrappers. In the 1920s the new owner of historic Rancho Camulos, Mary Rubel Burger, found 'an old shoe box' gathering dust among historic treasures in the attic of the famous old adobe ranch house. On the shoe box she found a Charles M. Russell sketch with two horses front and center; in the background were other horses with the initials C.M.R. over his legendary horned skull. Laid in are: a 1975 TLS from Tony Kroll of Pasadena to a collector, along with Kroll's later ALS, along with a copy of Outland's 2-page TLS to Kroll. From the correspondence we learn Frederick Renner, noted author on the works of Charles Russell, raised questions about the sketch's authenticity and that Outland planned to "withhold all copies [of this publication] from further distribution until we can possibly clear up some of the mystery..." .
