A detailed description of Humbolt County includes chapters on Eureka, discoveries previous to settlement, ancient inhabitants, the redwoods and other trees, geology, Humboldt Bay, the "Mattole", the railroad, the Klamath, descriptions of the author's first automobile trip through the area, the prices of farmland and how much profit a dairy farmer can expect to make, the events leading up to the expulsion of the Chinese population in 1885 and much more. Delmar L. Thornbury was the Principal of the Fortuna School, Eureka, CA in 1905, and later served as City superintendent of Eureka Schools from 1906 to 1911.
