A chronological record of new bond and equity issues in which White, Weld & Co. was a member the underwriting syndicate; the recto of each leaf bears a facsimile of the 'tombstone' of each bond issue from January 15, 1924 thru December 3, 1929 (most recent first). A 9-page typed index (listing 'Foreigns'; 'Industrials'; 'Municipals, States, Land Banks, Canadians, etc.'; 'Rails'; 'Public Utilities'; 'Real Estate Loans'; 'Miscellaneous') follows 15 leafs of 'tombstones' updating the list of issues to March 2, 1931. 'H.C. Winans' on the label has been lined out and an autograph 'A.M. White, Jr.' added. White, Weld & Co. was a Boston-based investment bank, historically managed by Boston Brahmins until its sale to Merrill Lynch in 1978. The Weld family name can be traced back to the founding of Massachusetts in the 1630s. (wiki). H.C. (Hubert Charles) Winans was a prominent New York investment banker; Alexander Morse White, Jr. was the son of one of the founders of the firm. The dramatic contraction in Wall Street financing (7 issues in 1930 and only 3 in 1931) provide stark evidence of the financial devastation brought by the Depression of the 1930s.
