Puublished anonymously, the author is purportedly Joseph Budworth, subsequently Joseph Palmer. In a series of letters, the author tells of his travels beginning in Dover and proceeding through a number of cities in France. He details his observations of the scenery, architecture, accommadations and much more. Curiously, after a pleasant journey from Tours to Orlean, he ends his travel memoir with a lengthy and tragic description of a public execution in which the criminal is "broken alive"
