Fun Map of Nevada City, Californnia
Nevada City, CA: circa 1950s. 22" x 17 1/2" color map. Includes text and advertisements. The map, reminiscent of the iconic ‘cartes’ of Jo Mora, is folded and in fine condition; a rare caricature map of Nevada City, only 2 copies (different sizes) located at the California Historical Society. This fun map was the work of Nevada City printmaker & painter George Mathis. Mathis moved to Nevada City in 1948 & opened a successful lithography studio, as well as a gallery that he & his wife Jean ran together. His prolific career included illustration work for the Aerojet Corporation in Sacramento, where he became known for his depictions of space, sketching the Gemini & Apollo space missions. He died in Santa Clara, CA, in 1977.
