Plans for the new Fairhaven hospital to be built on seven acres near the previous home at 4480 63rd Street in Sacramento. Dr. McKinnon succeeded his wife, Dr. Eleanor Rodgerson (the first woman obstetrics and gynechology specialist in Sacramento) as staff physician at Fairhaven, where he eventually delivered 451 babies over a period of 18 years.
Sacramento's Fairhaven Home for Unwed Mothers was established in 1898 as the 'Peniel Rescue Home' when Margaret Crocker donated her mansion at 3rd and 'O' Streets (now part of the Crocker Art Museum). In 1915 it moved to Colonial Acres and became 'Fairhaven Home for Unwed Mothers.' After 81 years of providing shelter and counsel to some 9,000 pregnant girls and women, Fairhaven Home for Unwed Mothers closed in 1979, a casualty of "the widespread use of birth control, legalized abortions and changing attitudes which makes it easier for young girls who are pregnant to live at home."
