Although we have located instances of thief detecting socities in other areas, such as Northampton, Worcester, Charlestown, Warren, Norfolk, and Bristol, we find no example of such a society in Pomfret; rare thus. Includes names of the Officers, Auditors, Pursuers, Prudential Committee, and Members. Thief detecting societies were common in the New England, particularly in the 18th & 19th centures, when formal law enforcement was limited. These groups were often formed by local communities to protect property, expecially horses, from theft.
