Yellowstone-themed boudoir cards captured the park’s natural beauties which were exotic and captivating to a Victorian-era audience hungry for glimpses of the American frontier. Photographers like Frank Jay Haynes, the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad, were key players. Haynes, based in Fargo, Dakota Territory, traveled to Yellowstone in 1882 and began producing these iconic images which served as both art and advertisement. Railroads, like the Northern Pacific, used them to lure tourists to Yellowstone, promoting the park as a must-see destination accessible by train.
