International Stop Continental Drift Society (ISCDS) Newsletters and epehemra

Winthrop WA: International Stop Continental Drift Society, 1978-84. The 14 Issues (3 of Volume 4 No. 3) of the 8 1/2" x 11" newsletters are each 8 to 16 pages and contain guest editorials, cartoons, limericks and letters from members. The lot includes two bumper stickers: 'Stop Continental Drift' and - 'Reunite Gondwanaland ' (Gondwana was a large landmass: the remnants of Gondwana make up around two-thirds of today's continental area, including South America, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Zealandia, Arabia, and the Indian subcontinent); four membership application forms and two 1982 TNS on International Stop Continental Drift Society notepaper and envelopes. Item #22733

The International Stop Continental Drift Society (ISCDS) was founded in 1976 by geologist John Holden as a humorous, tongue-in-cheek organization. Its stated mission was to demand that "the continents stop moving, the sea floor stop spreading, and major earthquakes and volcanic eruptions cease immediately." The group's motto is "Eschew Sea-Floor Spreading." It gained some traction among geologists, reaching around 300 members by 1981. Its newsletter appeared sporadically, "like natural disasters." Despite its playful tone, the society highlighted the inevitability of geological processes like plate tectonics, which drive continental drift. By the mid-1980s, the ISCDS had largely faded, though a private Facebook page with 170+ members still exists. A notable stunt involved Dutch geologists symbolically driving a giant screw into the ground in Leiden to "stop" the Eurasian tectonic plate. Some speculate the International Stop Continental Drift Society (ISCDS) inspired the idea of "climate change."
