A Near Fine copy. Isabella Bird was an English explorer, writer, photographer and naturalist.and the first woman to be elected as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. The book, compiled from Bird’s journal letters and diary, is a detailed travelogue chronicle of her 1896–1897 journey through central China, primarily in Szechuan (Sichuan) province and among the Man-tze (Miao) people of the Somo territory. Her descriptions of a pre-dammed Yangtze, with its seasonal fluctuations and thousands of trackers, are invaluable for understanding a lost landscape. Item #22736
