Ira Cross was Professor of Economics at UC Berkeley for over 40 years, 1914 - 1951. In this work, he traces the development of organized labor in California from the mid-19th century through the early 20th century, covering: Origins of Labor Organization (Gold Rush Era onward); Growth of Organized Labor; Labor and Politics; and Employers and Opposition. Still cited today by labor historians as a foundational text, even though more recent works expand on immigrant, minority, and women workers’ roles that Cross underemphasized.
