An important work by Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775 – 1818), English novelist and dramatist, whose writings are often classified as "Gothic horror". He is best known for his 1796 Gothic novel" The Monk". Lewis also worked as a diplomat, politician and an estate owner in Jamaica. In 1815, he travelled to Jamaica to inspect and manage his sugar plantation. His journal includes his observations on daily life on the plantation, descriptions of the slaves' lives and treatment, local culture and the tropical scenery. (Sabin 40821 for 1834 edition).
