Dr. Horatio Stebbins copy, with his manuscript name to front pastedown (with 'Cambridge') and ffep (with 'Harvard University 1848'). When Stebbins graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy he had a part in the Greek tragedy, and gave the class oration (in 1883, he was recalled to Exeter to give the oration at the centennial celebration of its founding). He graduated from Harvard in 1848 as chaplain and then from the Harvard Divinity School. He was minister of several New England churches before being called in 1864 to succeed Thomas Starr King as minister of the First Unitarian Church in San Francisco. For the next 34 years he devoted his efforts to expand he influence of his church on the Pacific Coast; he also involved himself in civic affairs, serving for 26 years as Regent of the University of California, trustee of the Inebriate Asylum, and as trustee of the Lick School of Mechanical Arts as well as Leland Stanford University.
