San Francisco: Hutchings & Rosenfield, 1856-1859. First editions thus. Octavos. A monthly publication that ran from 1856 to 1861 in San Francisco, founded by James Mason Hutchings, an English immigrant who arrived during the Gold Rush. It was known for promoting California and Yosemite Valley; popularizing Western legends such as the Pony Express, Grizzly Adams, Snowshoe Thompson, and Illustrating depictions of Gold Rush-era life. In Fair condition, each string-tied issue lacks its wrapper and has edgewear and chipping and light foxing. Includes Vol. I No1 (with the first first full published Yosemite -Yo-Ham-i-te- article and first published image and account of any Yosemite feature - 'Valley,' 'Falls' and 'Twin Domes') and Nos. VII, X & XII; Vol. II Nos. I, II, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12: Vol. III Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11 & 12. Item #22969
