El Paso TX: Cinco Puntos Press, 2001. First Edition. SIGNED by Jose Cisneros; INSCRIBED by Salas-Porras. 4to. 30, [2] pp. Color illustrations by Jose Cisneros. A fine copy in color illustrated dust jacket, as new. Item #23024
A charming bilingual picture book for preschoolers (ages 2–6), "remembered" by Pipina Salas-Porras—a Texas-based educator and storyteller whose parents fled Mexico during the Revolution—and illustrated with whimsical, ink drawings by Mexican–born American artist, José Cisneros. The story warns of a gullible mouse's fateful encounter with a sly cat through rhythmic verses that encourage memorization.
José B. Cisneros (1910 – 2009) was a Mexican–born American artist. He is known for his historical illustrations and drawings of early Texas, specifically of horsemen including charro, vaquero, Texas rangers, and Texas cowboys. Cisneros and Salas-Porras were longtime friends from the El Paso borderland community—both having grown up reciting the traditional 19th-century poem El Ratoncito Pequeño in their childhood classrooms.
