Log of the Yacht "Dragoon" and Hydroplane "Shoreleave"

Los Angeles: Stratford Enright, 1950 & 1966. Hardcover. 8vo. 42 pages of [168] pp in manuscript. Each page includes sections for date, travel locations, skipper & crew names, time, compass course and remarks. The owner, H. (Henry) B. Grandin, has filled out the following pages for his two trips: 1) 34pp manuscript of the July 3 - September 7, 1950 voyage of the ocean racing ketch "Dragoon" from Newport Beach CA through the Salish Sea, back to Seattle and return to Balboa, California  2) 8pp manuscript log of a second voyage, from September 1 - September 15, 1966 aboard Stanly W. Donogh's hydroplane "Shoreleave" from Bellevue WA through the Salish Sea to Glendale Cove in the Knight Inlet and return to Bellevue. Item #23027

The "Dragoon" log, with Grandin as 'skipper' and 10 passengers, is filled with observations of time, compass course and knot readings with 'remarks' - location, weather, wind speed, engine rpms, as well as descriptions of anchorages and, often, presence of no-seeums and mosquitos. Upon returning to Seattle the party met a few days of boat parades and a social whirl of dinners, cocktail parties and gossip before the 'skipper' took over and the "Dragoon" headed home.  Stanly Donough was an accomplished sportsman and a significant figure in the hydroplane racing community; he was Inducted into the Unlimited Hydroplane Hall of Fame in 1958. His yacht "Shoreleave" featured a landing pad for his helicopter. The log begins with the Grandins' flight to Seattle being met by the Donoghs, which began a two week social whirl. George Anderson Cook was the captain for the cruise, which explored much of the same territory the "Dragoon" did in 1950. This 'log' consists of weather, shore tours and social activities (the Donogh's helicoptered in one day) rather than technical seafaring information. After the return flight to L.A. The log concludes "Over for picture of 'Shoreleave' Perfect trip in every way;" a 3 1/4" x 5 1/2" photograph follows.
